ECO-TOURISM FOR
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT,
A PROGRAMME OF
SUSTAINABLE TOURISM FOR
FAYOUM GOVERNORATE
|
|
|
Project Description
|
South South International
Cooperation (CISS) has been
working in Egypt since 1998. Its
commitment has been
concentrated, since the
beginning, in eco-tourism sector
and related activities. NSCE
submitted a study on “Eco
Tourism with Social Dimension”
to CISS in March 2000, to submit
to the Foreign Affairs Ministry
for a co-financing request.
The project aims
to reduce the poverty of the
Fayoum Governorate people,
promoting the local economic
growth, through the protection
of the environmental oasis
heritage and the promotion of
training activities, small and
micro enterprises in tourism and
marketing field. The project
means to preserve and increase
the value of the environmental
and cultural heritage of Fayoum
and to promote the area as an
attractive destination for local
and international tourism.
Moreover, the project means to
promote the small and micro
local enterprise in the tourism
field through a wide training
and credit operation and to
support the local handicraft
sector through the recovery and
valuation of the cultural
heritage of the community.

PREPARATORY PHASE FOR
ECOTOURISM IN FAYOUM
|
|
Project Description |
The potential for
sustainable tourism in the
Fayoum, with its world class
fossil remains,
its
lakes, pristine desert areas,
bird sanctuaries, rural quietude
and cultural monuments is very
high. Yet, due poor signage,
services, interpretation and
infrastructure facilities, the
visitor number at cultural,
natural and archaeological
interesting sites is low and the
benefit of current tourism is
minimal as far as economic
benefits for the local
population and the governorate
are concerned. Properly planned
tourism could help to develop
and diversify the local economy,
provide much needed income and
arrest environmental degradation
by showing the people the
economic benefit of maintaining
a clean and healthy environment. |
