Egyptian Antiquities
Information Systems,
Phase I&II - EAIS

|
|
|
Project Description
|
The value of the Egyptian
historical and cultural heritage
is unique in the world. As a
subcontractor to the Finnish
Environment Institute, NSCE is
providing the Team Leader and
national consultants, as well as
backstopping services to the
Egyptian Antiquities Information
System Project (EAIS).
The aim of the project is to
establish a geographic
information system for the
Supreme Council of Antiquities
(SCA), the body responsible for
the protection and maintenance
of the antiquities and their
sites in Egypt. The project
purpose is to improve the
overall information as well as
the site and heritage management
capacity of SCA, enabling it to
perform its tasks in mapping,
documentation and protection of
archaeological sites in Egypt.
In order to achieve these goals
the project supports the
development of a geographical
information system (GIS) for the
management of Egyptian
antiquities. The GIS includes a
national level database and a
site level GIS database for
detailed registration, to be
tested on three pilot sites. In
addition, the project focuses on
the development of cooperation
and improved information
exchange between the numerous
institutions involved in
cultural heritage preservation
and documentation.

PREPARATORY PHASE FOR
ECOTOURISM IN FAYOUM
|
|
Project Description |
The potential for
sustainable tourism in the
Fayoum, with its world class
fossil remains,
its
lakes, pristine desert areas,
bird sanctuaries, rural quietude
and cultural monuments is very
high. Yet, due poor signage,
services, interpretation and
infrastructure facilities, the
visitor number at cultural,
natural and archaeological
interesting sites is low and the
benefit of current tourism is
minimal as far as economic
benefits for the local
population and the governorate
are concerned. Properly planned
tourism could help to develop
and diversify the local economy,
provide much needed income and
arrest environmental degradation
by showing the people the
economic benefit of maintaining
a clean and healthy environment. |

Cultural Preservation and
Economic Development in Siwa
Oasis
|
|
Project Description
|

NSCE in
cooperation with the Italian NGO
“Cooperazione Sud-Sud” (CISS)
agreed to cooperate in the
implementation of a pilot
project in Siwa oasis. The goal
of the project was to contribute
to the cultural preservation
efforts in the oasis of Siwa and
to contribute to the development
of cultural and eco tourism in
the oasis through the
development of culturally based
economic activities targeted to
low-income groups and more
specifically to youth and women.
In consultation
with the Siwa house, the local
partner, it was decided to
support the revival of Siwa
local jewellery production with
supply of technical and
managerial training and training
material to 8 men and women,
which eventually started to
produce traditional Siwan
Silverware. |
