MENA Child Protection Initiative (CPI)

Project Description The MENA Child Protection Program hosted at the Arab Urban Development Institute is preparing reviews of the status of urban children in ten MENA cities, outlining the key institutions responsible for addressing children’s issues and assessing their capacity.

The purpose of these reviews is to prepare a phased capacity building exercise in selected institutions (including the governor and municipal offices), in order to address children issues in urban and peri-urban settings with reference to child protection of vulnerable and disadvantaged children.

NSCE has been contracted to provide consultancy services focusing on the review/ assessment in Alexandria. The consultancy will include the following:

A review of the status of urban children, including health, nutritional, educational and social status, by gender and age group. As well as the review of the nature and magnitude of the problems faced by these children in Alexandria with a comparison between urban and rural children.

An outline of institutions responsible for addressing children issues in Egyptian urban areas, especially in Alexandria. In addition to municipality offices, NGOs, key actors in this field as well as the ones who potentially could play a major role in children’ s issues.

An assessment of the capacity of selected institutions, including recommendations for capacity building needs and a phased action plan for capacity building in including costs.  The findings of the study has been  compiled into a final report that includes the above reviews and assessments.

Children of the Nile or Strengthening a Network of Egyptian NGOs in Early Child Development

Project Description

Provide technical and financial support through training and subgrant to a network of 30 NGOs to introduce sound early child development practices in 8 governorates and improve the learning environemnt. Develop  a network to improve communication flow between  departments of mothers and children of the ministry of social affairs in 8 governorates.

Introduced local NGOs to participatory approaches and governance methodology as a tool to strengthen the organizational and institutional capacity. In addition, training courses were conducted on technical and managerial skills along with communication and negotiation skills, based on enforcing the participation of staff, board and association members in the planning of activities implemented by organizations and factors affecting organization’s ability to mobilize resources.

Gender and Early Childhood Development (ECD) Practices Project

Project Description

To strengthen the managerial and technical skills of the targeted organizations staff members, NSCE developed and designed a special training program on organization management and financial management within the Early Childhood Development project.

The goal of the ECD gender component is to introduce gender awareness in early childhood development curricula in NGOs through conducting interactive participatory workshops and training to analyze constrains, set priorities and solve problems with all key actors participating in the project. Part of activities included books and publications to address the importance of gender equality during the early socialization process.
